Globe Trotting

Do you remember the days when just running a marathon was good enough? Dean Karnazes ran 50 marathons in 50 consecutive days in 50 states. A few days ago, Irishman Richard Donavan completed seven marathons in five consecutive days on seven continents. Donavan logged a staggering 26,700 air miles zig-zagging the globe in pursuit of his marathon goal, thus establishing an individual world record for the production of green house gasses.

Summer time fun

There is a battle brewing in Santa Barbara. Nite Moves vs. Reef & Run. Nite Moves has been a Wednesday evening Santa Barbara tradition for years. Ocean swim, run or both. Race, have a brew, talk story with your buds. Reef and Run will offer similar events and be held at East Beach on Tuesday nights. Who will reign supreme? We'll find out this summer. The tension between race organizers is already heating up. This is going to be good.

Getting Aero

Several people asked me what exact changes I made to my bike set up. When Chuckie first evaluated me he had me hop on the trainer and ride for a while. His initial impression was I was a bit too stretched out. He wanted my elbows at more of a 90 degree bend. I've been suffering over the past few years with the old man lower back ache and Chuckie surmised my position was probably contributing to the problem. Things can change a bit on the road so Chuckie followed me around snapping pictures to comfirm his diagnosis. Chuckie suggested a shorter stem and aerobars I could adjust the pads further back. I settled on the Profile T2+Cobra and the Profile Cobra Wing Base Bar. I changed from a 100mm stem to a 90mm. I also raised my seat around 5mm, and voila!, I went from Quasimodo to having a nice flat, aero back, just like a table top, which comes in very handy for Chuckie since he likes to use it to place his glass of Merlot when we ride around the SYV.

Day 35 of Ironman- AM secret workout, 1:20 minutes of hell, PM core work and shoulder rehab at the gym.
Day 36- 1:30 run with 2x15 second all out sprints.

Old Dog, New tricks

Let's face it, I'm an old dog. I've been competing in triathlons for 20 years now and I admit I can be a little nonplussed when it comes to the sport. That is why I need to shake it up once in a while. I usually go for a gadget; new heart rate monitor, gps, race wheels, you get the idea. This year, Chuckie V has been helping me shake up my cycling. Our first task, evaluate and refine my bike position. With a change of aerobars and stem I went from this:
To this:The goal is to be both as aero and as comfortable as possible. We'll be tweaking things along the way but I think we're 95% there.

Two Labs for you

This email was forwarded to me; maybe you can help. I have two labs. I think you need two to.

If you know of someone looking for a beautiful pair of labs to love and care for please contact Sarah @ sasbehzadi@gmail.com

We are moving in just 2 weeks and unfortunately, I have still not been able to find a good home for Cookie and Coco . We're not able to take our beloved doggies with us and I've been desperately trying to find a home for both of them 'together'. They were raised together and pine without each other.

Both doggies are in great health, have been spayed and have ID chips implanted under the skin. Cookie turned 3 December 10th and Coco will be 3 April 1st.

Cookie is my mellow-yellow, and just loves her tummy rubbed. Coco is adorably funny and lives for her "ball". She also loves the water..... Cookie loves lots of attention. Both doggies are loyal and love to walk.

They have been raised with my 3 kids running around all over the place, and have survived Sammy's constant hugging and love of 'dress-up', so they are fantastic family dogs.

This is by far one of the most difficult decisions I have ever had to make, but under the circumstances I have no choice.

Please, Please forward these pics to all you know and help me find a great home for these fabulous doggies. They are just adorable and it's heartbreaking to let them go. In a perfect world, I hope that we could find someone local so that we can still keep in touch and visit them. I pray that someone, somewhere can help us keep Cookie and Coco together, and love them just as much as we do.

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

Bad Wheel

I have a bad wheel. The left one to be exact. So says Chuckie V who followed me around the valley a few weeks ago. In between his witty banter and other Chuckisms, CV shot pictures and videos all morning and expounded his sage like advice. And I listen. Yep, my left leg rotates with the smoothness of a flat tire. I have a major hitch in my giddy. Chuck says it could be hip alignment and an underdeveloped left glut. So tell me, do these shorts make my butt look small?

Day 25 of Ironman- 2 hour run, 1:30 bike
Day 26- Masters swim
Day 27- Core work at the gym, Track workout with Mike- 4x400, 1mile, 2 time thru. I tried to keep my HR under 160

Procrastination

Nothing brings out the slacker in me like a little rain. Yesterday I had scheduled a fairly heavy workout, a 5 hour ride followed by a short run. A steady morning drizzle set my procrastination wheels in motion. Walk the dogs, coffee and a bagel, tidy up the garage, walk the dogs again. As the morning ebbed closer to noon, I reluctantly decided to opt for the computrainer. A five hour indoor ride is a freaking long time and not my favorite way to spend the day. Of course, soon after I started the weather started to clear and by the time I finished it was actually a little sunny. If I had only waited a little longer.

Day 23 of Ironman- Masters Swim, short run
Day 24- 5 hour ride, 45 min easy run

Gotta Hurt

This is the very reason why you should wear a cup while cycling. A great picture from Daniel Bayer.

Day 22 of Ironman- Today was a top secret workout from Chuckie V. I was sworn to secrecy. All I can say it was done in a gym, lasted about an hour, and I sweated a lot.

Bad Wing

It really wasn't much of a surprise. My shoulder hasn't been quite right since my bike accident a few years ago. It has been bugging me more than usual of late so I decided to pop into the local MRIs 'r Us for a look see. Torn rotator cuff and a split biceps tendon. Arthroscopic surgery and 5 months of rehab and I'll be as good as new. But that fun will have to wait until after Ironman. Until then, it will be a little PT and plenty of vitamin suck-it-up.

The Bailout

The 700 billion dollar bailout package. You may have been wondering, What's in it for me? Buried deep in the bill, Congress threw bicycle commuters a little bone. Basically you can receive a $20/month tax credit if you commute mostly by bicycle to work. You can read the provision here. Finally a piece of pork I can take advantage of.

Day 14 of Ironman- 70 minute run, skipped Masters swim this morning 'cause my shoulder has been bugging
Day 15- Run- 3x10 minutes at 155HR, 1 hour total, Core work at the gym

One Big Ring

The Wanger forwarded me this picture this morning and all I can say is that is one big cookie. Back in the day, Jurgen Zack geared up a triple with a 63 big ring during his Hawaii Ironman career. While everyone else was spinning out during the descent from Hawi, Jugen would be cranking away on his 63. Of course he would be totally fried for the run so I suppose his overall race strategy may be a little suspect.

Day 5 of Ironman- Easy day, AM masters swim, PM 20 easy run
Day 6- AM- easy run 45 minutes, Lunch- core and lower body at the gym, PM- 1.5 hours Bike, 15 minutes at 130 HR, 15 minutes at 135, 15 minutes at 140, 15 minutes at 145.

Funny Lady

Marci on her way to an age group victory in '91 Nationals

Who's one of my all time favorite triathletes? Paula Newby? Mark Allen? No, it's Santa Barbara's own Marci Steelman. Marci hasn't raced in quite a few years but in her heyday she was a national age group champ and pro rookie of the year. I usually run into Marci a couple times a year, and usually, after having three kids, she is attempting some sort of comeback. So I was surprised and pleased to see Marci at our early morning run workout. Marci is a crack up. You never know what is going to come out of her mouth. So why is she so high on my all time list? Being funny scores big points with me, and, Mark Allen has the sense of humor of a potato.

Day 2 of Ironman- AM swim masters, PM- easy 45 minute run
Day 3- AM run workout, 6x 1/2 mile hill repeats, probably 11 miles total, keeping HR below 150.

Shave Ice

As we finished our hike through Diamond Head crater, my Midwestern in laws gravitated toward a roach coach colorfully emblazoned with "Hawaiian Shave Ice". I was a little wary.
"There are only a few places where you can get authentic shave ice", I explained. I peered inside and sure enough, "They are making snow cones, not shave ice." I walked away. "Whats the diff?" they asked, thinking I was some sort of snow cone snob. "Real shave ice is made from a razor sharp blade skimming an ultra thin layer off a rotating block of ice. It is topped with syrups from exotic tropical fruits. I like guava or lilikoi. Snow cones are made from crushed ice. You probably like them in grape or cherry. Not the same." They turned around and headed back to the roach coach, probably thinking I was crazy. They ordered cherry.

Shave Ice is da kine, and my buddy Barack agrees.

Mele Kalikimaka

Santa Barbara was getting a bit chilly of late so it was off to Hawaii for a little relaxation. A little run around Diamond Head, some swimming, surfing. I really feel fortunate that I have Hawaiian roots rather than, lets say, some midwest winter hell hole.

Friendship

A friend sent me this the other day. Its funny in that juvenile, sophomoric kinda of way, which suits me just fine.

1. When you are sad, I will jump on the person who made you sad like a spider monkey jacked up on Mountain Dew!!!

2. When you are blue, I will try to dislodge whatever is choking you.

3. When you smile, I will know you are plotting something that I must be involved in.

4. When you're scared, we will high tail it out of here.

5. When you are worried, I will tell you horrible stories about how much worse
it could be until you quit whining, ya big baby!!!!

6. When you are confused, I will use little words.

7. When you are sick, stay away from me until you are well again. I don't want whatever you have.

8. When you fall, I'll pick you up and dust you off--After I laugh my butt off!!

9. This is my oath... I pledge it to the end. 'Why?' you may ask;
-- because you are my FRIEND!

***********************
Friendship is like peeing your pants, everyone can see it, but only YOU can feel the true warmth.

**********************
Try sending this to 10 of your closest friends, Then, get depressed 'cause you can only think of 4.

Lost

We weren't really lost, we just ran out of day light. That was our story after spending one cold December night in the Los Padres wilderness some eight years ago. What started as a morning mountain bike ride up to Little Pine Mountain with my bud Mike T., turned into a day of boulder hopping, creek crossings, and bush whacking. That's what happens when you turn right instead of left. The end was always around the next bend. The following morning we made it to the ranch roads east of Lake Cachuma where we managed a free helicopter ride courtesy of the sheriff department. The first comment from Ellen when we arrived home: "So did you make spoons with Mike to keep warm?"

Knuckle Sandwich

Another remedy from Vince's Big Book of Fringe Medicine. I totally forgot about this gem until Ellen reminded me the other day. You may have heard about shark cartilage and cancer prevention. The theory is, sharks do not get cancer, eat shark cartilage, no cancer for you! I'm a little skeptical about this one but my father-in-law Vince has taken it to another level. Too cheap to actually go to the health food store to buy actual shark cartilage, Vince substituted what he thinks is the next best thing. Chicken Knuckles. I am unclear whether he washes it down with a Listerine chaser.

Don't cramp your style

Ellen calls him a bit eccentric. I call him a little crazy. He gets most of his medical knowledge from his barber and speaks with the authority of a Harvard Medical School grad. He expounds the miraculous healing powers of Listerine and yet when he speaks, I listen with great anticipation. That's my father-in -law, Vince. Spending Thanksgiving day with him was bound to turn up another nugget of medical wisdom. So here it is. The malady: leg cramps. The cure: sleep with a bar of soap under the covers. He has used both Dial and Ivory and they both work. Who knew.

Fight On

I love college football. I love good ol' rivalries. My good friend Tom bleeds Irish green. His father played football for the legendary Knute Rockne and as expected, Tom is about as die hard of a fan as you can get. I repect that. My buddy Cook mocks my love of all things Trojan, but I think he secretly wishes he had a big time college team to root for. I guess it is not the same rooting for UCSB soccer. This weekend USC plays cross town rival UCLA. The Rose Bowl is on the line for the Trojans; the Bruins are looking for the big upset. Ironically the biggist Bruin fan I know, my friend Kristen, did not even attend UCLA. I suppose she just has a penchant for powder blue.

The WCC

I took Morgan and Lilo up to West Camino Ceilo the other day. This was Lilo's first time; Morgan has been up there plenty. My old dog Tux was the king of the WCC. We would spend hours on a running adventure. The rest of the day we would spend snoozing on the sofa. It doesn't get much better than that.

Swim like an Eagle

It has always amazed me how most animals have an innate ability to swim. Here is a story about a woman who used swimming to help rehabilitate an injured bald eagle. I also found a video of an eagle swimming in the wild.

I hate to admit it, but there is an uncanny resemblance between the eagle swimming and the last 25 meters of my 200 fly.

Nike didn't do it

Just a little update on Arien O'Connell, the winner of last months San Francisco Nike Woman's Marathon who was denied her first place moment in the sun. Reebok has apparently stepped up and provided Arien a years worth of running shoes and various other swag. Nike stubbed their toe on this one.

Here is what is left of Duncan and Terry's house. There are more pictures here. I was really disappointed their antique stove went down in flames. Some of the best shortbread cookies came out of that baby. Sometimes there is no justice in life.

High Times

Soon after I snapped this photo Sunday morning, my black lab Morgan was rushed to the CARE emergency hospital. She wasn't able to walk, was shaking and having urinary incontinence. Poisoning, I thought. Off to the hospital. The Vet did an exam and asked the usual questions. Her diagnosis: marijuana toxicity! She asked if Morgan had access to marijuana. The only place I could think she could have gotten some is during our morning run, she was rooting around a lookout point at Elings Park where I know people come to party. After a night in the hospital, she has apparently recovered. It was quite a scare. In retrospect, Morgan does look a little stoned in this picture, probably craving a bag of Doritos.

The stoner look is universal.

Unwanted Jogging Partner

I was slightly annoyed the other day when a pebble wandered into my shoe during the last tempo run with Mike and Rusty. Then I read this story about an Arizona woman who ran a mile back to her car with a rabid fox attached to her arm. I guess a little blister isn't so bad.

Sunday, November 16, 2008

Tea Time

Enough with the fires already. Santa Barbara has once again been hit hard by the Tea Fire. My good friends Duncan and Terry Thomas lost their house and a lot of memories Thursday night. Larry and Cheri Savage narrowly escaped and fortunately their house was spared. Klaus and Lynelle defied the evacuation order and hunkered down in their Tunnel Road home. I think they were going for a Darwin award.

When is the fastest time not the winning time? Apparently at the San Francisco Nike Women's Marathon. 24-year-old Arien O'Connell posted the fastest time of the day but since she did not register as an elite athlete she was denied the gold medal. Race organizers defend their position. I think it is just weak sauce.
