Breathing easier
This is one of my favorite WWF ads, somewhat appropriate as we Santa Barbarians clear the smoke from our lungs after a horrendous week. Ironically, investigators seem to think the origin of the fire was a result of using power tools to clear brush as a fire prevention measure. They have not identified the responsible party but I have the feeling if they do, their punishment will play out in one of two ways: 1. if they are volunteers from the Montecito Trails Association- a stern talking to by mayor Marty Blum, including some finger wagging , or 2. if they are some poor Hispanic immigrants working for minimum wage- jail time and a demand to reimburse the county for the 3 million fire fighting cost.

Do you have the time?

I think it is time for another father-in-law Vince story. Vince is a connoisseur of fine watches. Rolex watches to be specific. At least since Vince picked up a fine Rolex during a trip to Thailand. "The guy wanted $100 but I bargained him down to 80.", Vince said proudly. Ellen and I rolled our eyes. So on his latest senior excursion to Vegas, Vince saunters into the Rolex store. I guess he thinks he is now in some sort of elite club. "Wow",Vince said, "I saw a watch for $45,000!" I asked Vince, "So how do you explain how you paid 100 bucks... "that was 80 bucks", Vince corrected, "...for a watch costing thousands of dollars?" " I drive a hard bargain." But sadly Vince's Rolex has since died. " I think I got ripped off", lamented Vince. Now Vince sports two watches, one on each wrist. An old Timex to tell the time, and his Rolex to flash when he is entertaining the ladies.

The Price of Shoes

How much did you pay for your last running shoe? Probably too much according to Christopher McDougall. McDougall claims the rate of running injuries are on the rise and due to a large part by the "latest" technology marketed by the 20 billion dollar shoe industry."Every year, anywhere from 65 to 80 per cent of all runners suffer an injury. No matter who you are, no matter how much you run, your odds of getting hurt are the same."

Close Shave
Today, during my weekly torture session with Erika, massage therapist/dominatrix, I had a lengthy discussion of the merits of shaving down. Triathletes, cyclists, and swimmers all like to shave off any excess body hair. Whether it makes you faster, helps with massage, or you just like being a poser may be up for debate, but frankly, I just don't find the need. I don't have a lot of body hair, probably due to low testosterone and an overall lack of manliness. And I am just a bit lazy.

Brain Power

Another secret tip. The finish line is closing in. Your breathing rate is on the verge of hyperventilation. You are running low on fuel and energy but there is absolutely no way your stomach could handle a gulp of Gatorade or gel. It turns out carbohydrate drinks significantly boost performance in an endurance event even without being ingested. Taking a swing and spitting it out triggers specific areas of the brain to reduce the athletes' perception of their workload. Just in case you think I'm blowing smoke, here is the abstract from the Journal of Physiology.

Change in Position
Is this the future of time trial positions? "The power numbers were night and day" says pro T.J. Tollakson. After wind tunnel testing, T.J. McGyvered his setup using parts from a hardware store and jock cups for elbow rests.
We saw Floyd Landis adopt a similar position a few years ago at the Tour de California. It looks a bit wanky and probably won't catch on until someone sets a course record at Hawaii or Lance embraces the change. Until then, it is yet another thing roadies will mock tri geeks for.Day 105 of Ironman- core work at the gym, masters swim

Days of Ol'

Over the years, many of my training partners have come and gone, either moving away from Santa Barbara or just losing interest in endurance sports as their life's priorities changed. So it was a bit of a treat to spend a long day training with my good friend Aerojonny last weekend. Jon has been on an extended triathlon hiatus of late but in his heyday he was quite the triathlete; USA National team member traveling to the World Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland. We trained, raced, and had a hell of a good time. Epic rides around the lake in pouring rain, RV'ing it at Wildflower. He coined the term "Sato Alley", a stretch along the Rincon where Jon would conveniently drop the hammer, popping me off the back gasping for breath and seeing stars. Jon has been making a bit of a comeback training for Ironman France later this year so it was off for one of our favorite long rides out to Santa Paula. I hung on Jon's wheel for most of the ride. When we reached Sato alley, Jon put the hammer down. As Jon pulled a way, I desperately cried out the "rubbing brake" excuse. It was a great time, like old times.

Lance vs France, continued
"They butchered my haircut" complains Lance Armstrong after an unannounced drug test at his home in France. Armstrong continues to have a contentious relationship with the French doping authorities. "This is just another example of the improper behavior by the French laboratory and the French anti-doping organizations,” Armstrong said. “I am sorry that they are disappointed that all the tests were negative, but I do not use any prohibited drugs or substances.” More on the drama HERE.Day 98 of Ironman- Core work at the gym, 2 hour bike

Castaway

Her family was devastated. Little Sophie Tucker fell overboard from her family's yacht during rough seas off the coast of Australia. After an exhaustive search of the area, Sophia was lost at sea and presumed drowned. But the young girl showed a little more grit and determination that no one could have imagined. Swimming six miles through shark infested waters, Sophie landed on a small uninhabited island off the Queensland coast. Sophie survived off the land, hunting wild goats while living in the island's rain forest. Over four months later she was rescued. Sophie's family anxiously awaited the arrival of her rescue boat. "When we saw her, she started whimpering and banging her cage." WHAT!? Oh, I neglected to mention Sophie is a dog. You can read more about her amazing tale of survival HERE.

Just Fix it
This is my fixey. I bought it a few years ago, a novelty to tootle around town. A fixey is a fixed gear bicycle. One gear. No free wheel. No coasting. To go, you spin. To stop, you stop spinning. A true fixey has no brakes, making it quite exciting if you find yourself careening towards on coming traffic. A fixey is not for the faint of heart. This is why I was quite surprised to find a fixey descending the Harris Grade at this weekend's Solvang Century. As I started my decent down this 6%, 2 mile stretch, I noticed a man furiously pumping his legs. As we approached 40 mph, his legs were a blur, an out of control egg beater. My God, I thought, he is on a fixey! I was mesmerized. Will he crash? Will his legs fall off leaving him a just a bloody torso? When we reached the flats, I pulled up beside him. "I salute you Mr. Fixey of the Solvang Century." That was the most impressive athletic feat I've seen in a while.Day 70 of Ironman-2 hr bike, moderate effort

It's in your genes

100 meter dash or marathoner. Would you DNA test your baby to see which sports they will excel? The test is available for $149 from Boulder based Atlas Sports Genetics. It seems to me this all seems to work out on its own. Isn't that all part of the fun and challenge of growing up? You don't need a DNA test for that. Now, I did have a DNA test preformed on my dog Lilo, but you are going to have to wait to hear the rest of that story.

On Track

Great mental strength or weakness of mind. I have to wonder what it really takes to train for an ironman race. Training is just a series of repetitive movements done over and over, for hours at a time. And let's face it, even an ironman race itself is pretty boring stuff. The only real excitement comes only when the gun goes off and when you cross the finish line. Last Friday I spent the afternoon running on the track. 8 miles, 32 mind numbing laps of collecting heart rate and pace information all so I can raise my arms in mock victory come June.

Bad to the Bone
There is an interesting article in the LA Times relating loss of bone mass and density and cyclists. It seems the low impact nature of cycling makes avid cyclists, both amateur and professional, at risk for bone injuries if they don't do any type of cross training. Like everything in life, it is best to mix it up once in a while.

Figge's Folly

Well, the true facts are coming out on our friend Jennifer Figge's record breaking Atlantic swim. Apparently, Ms. Figge swam 19 out of the 25 days it took for her boat to make the crossing. She swam as much as 8 hours in one day, but also as little as 21 minutes. The rest of the time she relaxed on the boat. They estimated she swam 200 to 250 miles. On her best day, aided by a strong current, Figge covered 25 miles. Ironically after finishing her swim, Figge's boat sank while leaving Tobago. All were safely rescued so Figge lives to swim another day. 200 miles is still a long way to swim so I guess I do give her some credit for that accomplishment.

Number 80
Today was a special day. Ol' Vince turned 80 and I had the pleasure to spend the afternoon in Santa Maria with my father-in-law. I touched on Vince's expertise on all things medical here and here, but that only gleans the surface of Vince's curiosities. Vince fancies himself as quite the horticulturist, a gardener extraordinaire, the keeper of the Santa Maria Botanic Gardens. His backyard is his domain.
Vince hopes for a big harvest from his plum tree. "It just needed a little trimming."
Vince developed a new variety of tomato called "pea tomatoes".
He keeps everything thriving by liberally spreading around his special "compost" which consists of random pieces of vegetable matter, egg shells, and just about anything else he scraps off his dinner plate.
Vince controls weeds by using this old shower door. He moves it around his backyard smothering out those nasty invaders.
These trash cans collect rain water for plant irrigation. During the summer, they serve as mosquito farms. If there is an outbreak of West Nile virus in Santa Maria, you'll know why.

After a hard day, Vince will often sun himself on his deck.
Happy 80th Vince!

Stinky Shoe

I've been a little depressed with all the rainy weather when a friend suggested I should try Bikram Yoga. "Oh, I've tried Bikram Yoga..." Then I went off into a bit of a rant. For those who are not familiar, Bikram Yoga is preformed in a super heated room. Yoga in a sauna. The heat makes you nice and loose so you can contort yourself into all those unnatural positions. Except there are 30 other people in the room with you. Sweating, dripping, stinking. Yoga in an old, hot, stinky shoe. There is a nice carpet which absorbs your sweat, along with the sweat from the past 50 classes. Yoga in a petri dish. As the class went off into their crazy yoga breathing, I hallucinated I was back in Nam. POW in solitary, in a black box, baking in the sun. Only a black box would be too nice. I was trapped in that old stinky shoe. This is what John McCain must have endured. But I am no maverick, so I left. Fresh Santa Barbara air never felt so good. If this sounds appealing, you can check it out here.

Atlantic Swim
Another record setter. 56 year old Jennifer Figge becomes the first women to swim the Atlantic. Figge left the Cape Verde Islands off Africa’s western coast battling 30 foot waves, swam 2,100 miles, reaching a beach in Trinidad in 19 days. 19 DAYS?! I'm sorry Ms Figge but that is impossible. You're telling me you swam 110 miles a day? Did you use some crazy current like the turtles used in Finding Nemo?
